Ohh.. I do that so the heater won't fail. After I broke my first heater and getting electrocuted, I started doing that and I find this "not scary".
It's just trauma after the accident..

Okay, since yer posting, we can presume that you got a shock, not electrocuted!
If you got a shock, the device is faulty and should be discarded. It also raises the pint that all aquarium accessories should be plugged in to a GFIC (Ground Fault Interrupter Circuit) or equivalent since water and electricity don't like each other much!
EDIT: LOL - above I meant 'raises the POINT', not pint...raising the pint is what you'd do in the UK! (Mind yer P's 'n Q;s !)
