Raising Ph With Crushed Coral.

Hi all, i'm very excited about finally finding some NMS'. I plan to put them in a heavily planted 40 litre tank. The problem is the water in my area is very soft, just 1-2 degrees KH, because of this the ph levels out at about neutral (7), the NMS's probably won't breed in such low ph, they need 7.5 - 8.0, i plan on putting crushed coral in the tank before i get them but i don't use a external filter, this tank has a fluval 2 plus. Because of this it might be difficuly to put the coral inside the filter, my question is will the coral still raise the ph if it is just hnging in the tank?
