Hi all,

I have 2 oranda in a 90 litre tank.
One of them is being very lathargic and staying at the bottom of the tank. His scales are very pronounced and I am worried about him.
The other seems fine.
I have also noticed a little bit of cotton wool looking stuff near his rear end. He has been doing etremely long stools so I haven't fed either fish for several days.
I am continuing to do water changes as the amonia was a little high but sat within the safe levels for the Ph of the water.
Could anyone offer me advice please.
Many thanks Indeed

Chris

Hi,

Unfortunately it sounds like your oranda has dropsy and once they get to the stage of the scales being raised then there's not much you can do. The cotton wool like stuff is called fungus which is treatable with an anti- fungus treatment from your lfs. What colour are the long stools? as it may also have an internal parasite problem which can be treated with and anti internal bacteria treatment, I'd recommend interpet no.9, which is also supposed to help with dropsy but as I said it's probably gone too far to save it, sorry.

There is no 'safe' level for ammonia, it's highly toxic to fish and you should be aiming for 0 ammonia, this could be the root of the problem with the fish, the water isn't clean enough for them which is affecting their health. How much water are you changing and how frequently?

If its that far gone, might be better putting it out of its misery

I have been doing about 30% water changes. The water went cloudy very recently which I put down to bacteria?
I thought that he may be bloated and maybe have constapation, could it be this?
If I do have to put the fish down, which I am really worried about doing... How do I do it :(

If it is dropsy (google for images) then its terminal if the scales are porcupining. To kill the fish quickly i catch it in a net, then drop it in some wet paper, wrap it round the fish and then hit the fish hard with something on the head. Instant death

I agree once scales stick out organ failure.
Only thing to try is an epson salt bath, and a bacteria med.
