I just found some of these little beautiful goodeids on www.aquabid.com. WOW! These are the brightest colored goodeids I have yet seen. I got 4 pairs of them and the red on the males tails is amazing! I haven't seen this bright a color on a livebearer outside of the pet shop fancy varieties. I will try to get a picture on here to show everyone. This is a very aggressive species of goodeid, I had to put them in a heavily planted tank to try and give them all places to hide.

Male Caracodon lateralis los berros collection

These are loverly fish and sometimes they will leave the fry alone, but it's best to remove the fry ASAP.
They mature at about 3-4 months old and can live for 3-4 years.

They come from the the hi-land deserts od centeral Mexico and are onlt found in a small village call Los Berros.
The amazing this with these fish is that their only found in and around the spring as about 200 meters away the stream dissapears into the desert and dry's up.

Although it's a desert, the water is quite cool, ideal temp in 70-74oC

Rainbow Goodieads are not related to the general "Raindow" faimly from asia and aferica.

Just wish the pic would show I'll try again

As soon as I get new batteries for the digital camera I will put some pics on of my rainbow goodeids. Mine are not the los berros collection, they came labelled as Characadon lateralis Guadalupe Aguilera. I haven't had any success yet with breeding but I am fairly sure that at least one of the females is pregnant. I am going to see how easy it is to start a breeding community.

"Guadalupe Aguilera" is ref:- to the location they was found.

They are more like the C. audax and i belive they may be renameing them some time.

They are far as i know quite good with the fry. But dont risk ot with the first brood if u have just a pair.

Once u have a flock they should be fine given enough space.

Characodon Lateralis los berros) will usually kill their fry. 2 weeks before the female is due to drop her fry it is best to place her in a small but well planted tank. once all of the fry are borne remove her back to the main tank.average brood sides is up to about 20.

Characodon sp. Guadalupe Aguilera are less aggressive of towards the fry and tend to leave them alone if the tank is well planted. to be on the safe side it is best to remove them especially if there are very large adults with them. There is another type of lateralise. From los pinos both are the same colour and shape it's quite possible that they are of the same fish.
TO prevent hybrids Keep all goodeids in their own species tank .

hi Alan
I'm looking for some more goodeids lol. got girardinichthys multiradiatus for you

ok still waithing for tony to take them 3/4 black guppies!!!

Just an update on my goodeids. I still haven't found my digital camera so i don't have any pics yet. (moved a few months ago and still haven't figured out where all the boxes went!) Today I found 3 Characadon lateralis fry in the tank with the adults. One of the females was dead, I am assuming it was the mother? Is it common for the female to die after giving birth? This same sort of instance happened with my C. pardalis female after she gave birth. Is this because I didn't move her out of the tank with the rest of the goodeids? I have read that they are not aggressive towards their young so I assumed it would be okay to leave her with the others as long as there was plenty of plants for hiding.

It's not that comon but fish hay have problems birthing and will kill her if there are problems u cant help with.

I would advise to rear the fry away if you have a only a pair of fish, or so.
If you have a group then this may be better for the fry but as their not use to fry around they could turn and i've seen this in my fish befor!!.

I think the female had problems giving birth there was what looked to be a tail sticking out of her urinogenital openning so I am assuming that she basically got stuck? Is this a possibility? It seems to be what killed her. The fry were all dead by the time I found her and tried to do a C section. I am guessing that she gave birth overnight as most of my livebearers seem to give birth in the dark rather than with the light on. Would make sense as predators would have a harder time going after the young.
