I think the female had problems giving birth there was what looked to be a tail sticking out of her urinogenital openning so I am assuming that she basically got stuck? Is this a possibility?

Very possible, I've used tweesers to pull out fry which have become stuck like this in the past.


And i alsi find that most fish give birth at nite.
