I have a new Juwel 180 Litre waiting to be set-up, and a established 240 Litre. I heard that if you put the new Juwel filter in the established tank for a while the sponges will be quickly colonized with the bacteria needed. If I did this would I have to take the whole box juwel unit out and put it in my old tank or just take the sponges out and put them in, all of them or just certain ones? Or could I fill a bucket with water from my established tank and place a heater in there and just put the sponges in?

Hi crackmonkey :)

The beneficial bacteria you are wanting to get established in your new filter are already in your old tank. When you add another filter some of them will be caught in it and by consuming your fish's wastes will reproduce in it. They do need a steady supply of food to prosper, so running it in a bucket or a fishless tank will not work.

I would plan on running it for 2 weeks or longer to get it fully colonized, but then when you put it in the new tank you can (and should) add fish right away. :D

So do I put the whole juwel box in my old tank and run it along with the other juwel filter or leave it turned off? Or just place the sponges in my old tank and weight them down or something. All the sponges or just selected ones?

i would put the whol filter in and running personaly. it doesnt really matter. you just need to have a few fish in the tank when you put in the old filter. then stock slowly after around 2 weeks or so.

The old tank juwel filter is bigger so the sponges in the new filter wont fit, and anyway what would I do with the old filter media if I took it out, just let if float around?

I have done the same with mine, my brother gave me his blue sponge from his juwel 180, as his has been set up 8 months, and mine only 8 weeks, and i was having some problems.

I cut his sponge down to size, and put it in my filter, left my own in there too, so that the bacteria would spread accross, i left it in there about 2 weeks, then i took it out, things seem to be ok....

Hey crackmonkey

Ive not long cloned a tank (about 2-3weeks ago) and everything so far is perfect, my levels are all the norm and all my fish appreciate the extra space and sand substrate. I had to cut some sponge to size also so go ahead and cut it. As the other members have mentioned, dont leave the filter media without food for more than a couple of hours or the beneficial bacteria will start to die off.

Just stick one Juwel blue sponge from my new tank in my established juwel filter for two weeks or all the sponges. Would it work by just sinking all the sponges in layers next to the established juwel tank filter?
