My tank has snails which i am trying to eradicate through the use of clown loaches, but i wish to keep one and let it grow big, would it be possible to just put it into a bucket of my aquarium water and it grow, and if so what would need to go into the bucket with it.
Thankyou

and there was me thinking it was a question about a snail that moves quick :D

No seriously though i remember when i was a child we used to catch sticklebacks and snails and keep them in buckets for ages ( well the snails lasted ages not the fish :/ ) I was young and stupid though, but this was coldwater snails and not tropical so im not sure

ok, thankyou anyway, maybe i will just have to stick some in a bucket and try, unless someone comes up with information i suppose thats the only way

It'll work as long as your house is warm. Most snails are very hardy little things... Can't say it'll last long once you put it back in though.

If I was to do it I'd stick in a bit of elodea and do water changes as per usual because the water will get stagnant form sitting around

One question though?

If you Want to keep the Snail then WHY NOT leave him in the tank in Conditions that it is USE to.

Yes you could put him in a bucket, But being a WARM Water Snail how are you planning on keeping him heated?

Why not get you a smaller tank, lets say 10 gallon and Keeping only the Snail in it?

Pardon me for saying this but, Putting a Snail in a Bucket to live, is about like the small Containers they Put Bettas in.... :(

If you Truly want to ENJOY Him/Her invest in a Small Tank of it's Own, You won't Regret it and neither will the Snail.... :)

I've kept Snails for quite Some time and kept them UNDER CONTROL by watching for Newly Laid eggs, and taking them out before they had time to HATCH. This isn't as hard as it May Seem.

And well worth the extra effort, It's eaiser to take them out BEFORE they Hatch, then afterwards and have to try and Kill them all OFF.

Either by Chemical Means, or Natural.... But either Way let us know how the Snails Doing

yes the only problem there is, all my snails are live born, and ive got like 10-20 new ones appearing every day to two days

Seriously a bucket is plenty big enough for them... They produce very little waste and won't out grow a bucket.

Why not get an Apple Snail? they are rather big? or maybe im lost here wacko.gif
Stup3rman wanted to keep one of the snails he already has rather than buying a new one... But yeah, I agree with you... Thats an option if you want a large snail. They'll most likely grow to be larger than any you have in your tank

i suspect that once reintroduced to the main tank the loaches will eat the snail anyways. they tend to suck the snail from it's shell...

i think there is only one type of snail that you can keep with loaches (clown), the name escapes me  but i know it has a sort of hatch which it can use to cover the entrace to it's shell, which prevents the loaches from getting the occupant :p

i have clown loaches also, and we don't have any snails, i do quite fancy having a couple of apple snails, but i just don't want to risk it. if you do decide to go ahead with this, let me know how it goes!

good luck

kat :)
