Got a friend who is setting up a planted tank.

Just bought some gorgeous pieces of bogwood. however they are too big for any bucket etc. (soaking)

i said he could just put them straight in but use activated carbon to extract the tannins.

But he is planning on using plant fertilisers etc.

so....

will the carbon affect/remove the plant fertilisers?

best not to use carbon in a planted tank as it removes alot of the nutrients. for your bogwood you could try buying some large plasic storage boxes/bins and filling them with water to soak.

As Carl suggested encourage him to buy a big plastic storage crate to soak it in. Otherwise tell him to do water changes every couple of days. It will dilute the tannins. Don't bother fertilising the plants until the wood has stopped (or at least slowed) releasing tannins into the tank.
