Would a red devil be okay to live in a 55 gallon tank for the rest of his/her life?

Alone yes, with tank mates doubtfull as if memory serves these are rather aggressive fish, you probably could do one with some plecs but not sure about other mid swimming fish etc

the rd should be fine by itself (no other cichlids). plecs are good as darkentity said. you can try giant danios, as long as the red devil is small enough right now so it can grow with the danios. I have danios in with my jd and it seems that the jd just ignores them (don't see any cases of attack on the danios.. ie scars, missing scales/fins) but just makes sure watch it close because your fish may not be as sociable as my jd (he's quite docile as cichlids go)

Thank you so much. I saw one at my lfs and I absolutely fell over heels. He's white with orange fins. He's only about an inch and a half. I'm going to ask can I bring in some of my fish for him though because I know he'll have a field day in my tank.
Here's a video of one with convicts.
