My blood fin tetra has popeye. Both eyes are protruding. I have heard that tetracycline is is good drug to try. What is a good dose?

I read 250mg / gallon; but that seems a bit high to me....

Thanks in advance

Most of the meds I have seen are one tablet for every ten gallons. The directions should be printed on the box.

One word of caution - tetracycline can be harmful to the beneficial bacteria in the filter, so if you are using it, be sure to watch the water quality very carefully.

Kanacyn (aka kanamyicin) has become my favorite broad spectrum antibiotic, since it coveres a wide range of bacteria but is not supposed to hurt the filter.

I have tetracycline and erythromycin with no instructions because it is from my family doctor.
I have methacillin from the fish store with dose instructions...

I should add; in my 10g quarantine is my 3 albino corries and 1 red eye tetra. They have just finished a 6 days course of tetracycline, and two days of clean water (I did 30% water changes 3 days in a row and added back lots of carbon). My redeye's fungus is gone and fins growing back, my corries black bellies are almost gone but not yet. I thought I would treat the corries and the red eye in the1 10g tank with 250-mg/5g , as I read and did work with my red eye tetra....

When using antibiotics I do daily 10-15% water changes with minimal substrate cleaning...

Erythromycin 50 mg/L for 15 min

250 mg/ 25 gallons, indefinite
antibacterial
Cyanobacter control
ineffective. not advised
will not harm biological filter at this dose
It's good iv'e used it, but you will need to increase aeration.

Tetracycline Hydrochloride Treatment of bacterial infection, both gram positive and gram negative. one 250ml gram tablet to 10 gallons of water. Repeated treatment advised

only 15 minutes with an antibiotic? does this work?

That just for a bath in it, i added it to the tank.

How big is the tank you will be using it in.

Also i forgot to mention don't use antibiotics to much as the fish will get used to the dosage, so you have to keep increasing it all the time, where it will no longer work.

Wilder, do you mean that the bacteria become resistant to the medicine? You want your fish to temporarily get used to meds in the water. Over time bacteria get used to the antibiotics, and there are several strains out there now that are resistant to tetracyciline.
