Hey all,

I'm replacing my filter with a Fluval 205 on Wednesday and I just have a few quick questions:

1. I know you're supposed to transfer all the media over. However, there's a sponge on the intake of my current filter. Will there be bacteria on this or will it be inside the filter? If I need to transfer it across, should I put it on the intake or put it inside the filter?

2. I'm planning on getting some extra media to put inside since I'm told what Fluval supplies won't be enough. Was thinking of going with ceramic rings. Yay or nay?

I use the sponge on my intake purely as mechanical so wash it thoroughly once a week at water change time you should be able to just put it on the intake of the fluval. If you are getting more media for extra bio filter space then get porous media, either ceramic rings (not eheim efhi mech) or balls such as eheim ehfi pro. My twopenneth bet you better advice will come along soon.

cut up the sponge into one inch cubes and put them into the bottom trays of your new filter along with the old ceramic media, they will contain bacteria. sponges around the intake can decrease your flow a hell of a lot, the 205 has plenty of sponges so you wont need it where it is at the moment.
