hi all

i have just bought some Natural Sumatra wood for my new tank when it gets here do i need to soak it for a while like you do with bogwood or can i just give it a clean down and put it in?

If you want it to release tannins then just give it a quick scrub, if you want less tannins then soak it for a week or three.

It may not sink straight away so you will have to weight it down with some rocks.

ok thank you a will soak it :) just hope a cant find a bucket or something big enough to fit it in :p :good:

The bath should be big enough. :D

im not sure but... i dont think my misses will be too happy with me using the bath to soak some wood.... just a hunch but i think she would kill me  haha am sure i can find something big to fit it in its not big just long its about 36cm i might be able to get it in a bucket like :D

I would not use a bathtub to soak anything that will go into a tank. Firstly, while it may look clean to you, there will be soap scum and likely tub cleaner in small amounts all over it. While none of this is harmful to humans, it would more than likely transfer some to the wood and ultimately to the tank. I doubt you would use a cleaning bucket used for mopping floors and the like for fish tank use no matter how well rinsed it seemed to be.

i would just give it a quick scrub, and put into the tank, your waterchanges will get rid of the tannins

well im not getting the tank till Wednesday with it been new year and everything and i ordered the wood today so god knows when that will get here hopefully soon i will just use my bucket i use for water changes hopefully it will fit in that if not i will just have to soak it the best i can then put it in the tank, water changes will get rid of the rest of the tannins from it and hopefully that will be that :good:

Those plastic storage boxes are cheap, one if those would be an idea for soaking your wood, & an emergency fish holder if you ever needed one

My wood seems to have stopped leeching after 2 days, I put three pieces into a bowl of hot water overnight, one piece started off life floating, the next morning I took all pieces out & scrubbed them with a nail brush, rinsed them & put them back in a bowl of cold water the floating piece was now sinking... got home from work today (2pm) & apart from a oily film look the water is clear..

Is this right then as I've heard it's about 3 weeks worth of soaking or should I use hot water again instead of the cold ???
