Last monday I added some fish to the tank after cycling for about 30 days, the day I did the big water change was a day after we had a huge rainstorm, rivers were overflowing and so on.

I know my water out of the tap has a PH of 7.0 but I tested a couple of days ago and my PH level in the tank was down around 5.8 to 6.0, did the big rainstorm cause this, cause I double checked last night and out of the tap my water is still 7.0

sunday I am doing a 20 percent water change, now my question is when I put the new water in the ph will be 7.0, will that be to big of a change for the fish going from about a reading of 5.8 to 7.0 in one day??

someone please help I don't want to accidently kill anything

thanks Mike

what is the ph in your tank usually?

It could be your water is very soft so ph swings around (which is bad). oyster shell etc would help raise the ph. But we need to know what your tank usually is.

Going from 5.8 to 7 is far too big a change, but at 5.8 your pH could crash so you must really monitor that and also check your kH. I would advise that you do as i do age your water for a couple of days prior to adding it to the tank, that way you can adjust your Ph to that of your tank by adding blackwater extract or something if you need to take the ph down. Don't think that your tap water will always be the same you must also check and the same goes for your tank water.

the tank PH has always been around 7.0, my tap water that I have tested for the past month and a half has always been around 7.0
do you guys/girls think it had something to do with the huge rainstorm we had and then me changing the water in the tank the next day
when I do my water change on sunday I am only going to do about 15 to 20 percent that shouldn't bring the ph of the tank water up to rapidly I hope??

the tank has only been setup for 2 months and everytime I had checked the PH level prior to this time it had been around 7.0, the only time it has changed is when I did the big water change last monday and used the tap water after the huge storm

you've go nothing to worry about, just do your water change. if you did a 100% water change, then it might be different, but a 20% water change i hardly think you will see your pH rise by 0.4 at the most. you could do a 20% water change every 2 days to bring your pH up if you are worried about it being low
