Hey everyone,

Just had a quick guppy question for those of you who are experts. I recently noticed that one of my guppies' tails had been damaged. It definitely isn't fin rot, it looks more like he may have damaged it by swimming into a decorative item (or perhaps he was nipped). In any case, I discovered that he was injured because he had been trying to hide away from everyone else within the rocks.

I have since pulled him out and put him in a heated emergency tank. I give him 50% water changes daily, as well as a drop or two of MelaFix. The tail isn't getting any worse (if anything, it slightly seems better - slowly but surely). He's eating fine and he's super energetic, he's been in his own little tank for about a week. I guess my question is - when is the right time to add him back to the tank? He seems absolutely healthy, aside from the bit of his tail that is still growing back.

Any responses are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Tank mates might be the reason his tail was shredded. Not sure if the tetra or the barb would be doing that or the other guppy male, but i'd think the tetra.

quarantine new, ill and suspected ill fish for atleast 2 weeks before adding them back.

The skirt tetra is probably the original problem. Adding him back means new tears in his fins. It would also make it hard to keep his water pristine with daily 50% water changes. The pristine water is why he is healing, give him a break and at least let him heal before exposing him to aggression again.

Thanks everyone! I guess my only real concern is that I've never had guppies attacked by these other fish before - they always tend to get along really well. Maybe this was just an isolated incident?

Well done on mending him. If you don't mind running the tank, you could always just leave him in it until you need it for something else.
