Quick Q

Only if you add rediculously silly ammounts of them ;)

Stress Zyme will contain a small amount of ammonia due to the dead bacteria in it, and if you dumped like a 1g trade pack of the stuff into a 30g tank, it would mebe caurse a problem in the form of an ammonia spike, but you would need a lot of it to do that :good:

Stress coat contains alovera that supposidly stimulates the slime coat of fish. I doubt it does, but should it do as it claims on the bottle, the only way I see it working is by irritating the fishes skin :/ That could be dodgy if overdosed. The cheaper and IMO better plain water conditioner they do as well is very hard to overdose, unless you dump another trade pack of it into a 30g  A member on here quotes an API rep saying they tested that stuff at an overdose of 50X the recomended on without ill effects. API plain tap water conditioner is also very ecconomical, needing just 2ml for a 150l waterchange :good:

All the best

cheers rabbut, so sould i get the plain tap water conditioner, i have a rekord 60 so surly for my water change i would only need a drop of the stuff

thanks

The 2ml is from the smaller trade pack (500ish ml) that I buy. Smaller packs are more dilute also, so dosages on standord bottles will be different ;)

EDIT to add, there is nothing wrong with stress coat so long as you don't overdose it. IMO the alovera bit is just a sales gimic and you can save £ next time by getting normal conditioner when you need a new bottle :good:

For the StressCoat question:

Assuming for the moment we think of StressCoat as only a dechlorination/dechloramination product: Dechlor product overdosing has two "bits of lore" that I know of:

1) For mature tanks with a cycle that is mature, there is no problem with even large overdoses of a dechlor product and at times it can even be good when its use happens to coincide with the occassional overdoses of chlorine/chloramine by a water authority.

2) BUT, for fishless or fish-in still cycling tanks, there has been some concern (Hovanec, among others) that overdoses of dechlor product may inhibit N-Bac growth. My conclusion from that suspicion is that for people who are cycling, its much better to pay attention to the correct dosing per manufacturers instructions. I still feel its not necessary to be too exacting and that if you err, its better to err to the side of overdosing a little rather than underdosing, but people who are cycling might be wise not to just toss in large amounts.

As far as the "aloe" side of stresscoat goes, I've never paid attention to it or found it to be a problem. I've just ignored that aspect and used it as a dechlor product and it was fine. Most dechlor product discussions on TFF more recently have centered on cost and I changed to Prime because of these discussions, but now the leading edge seems to have moved on to some of the pond dechlor products which provide the same function at still lower cost.

For the StressZyme question: I agree with rabbut.
