the only heater i have doesnt have any temp settings. its an old juwel 50 watt heater im using in my new fry tank. i have no idea how it works. no matter what way i turn it the light stays on and it heats. i dont want to boil my water over night ???

If you don't want a temperature spike then dont use it.
I had a heater go on me, it lost it's temperature reading ability and just stayed on all the time. It was in a small Betta tank and so the temperature got up to almost 90 over night.

I recommend, if you can not go get a new one in a decent amount of time I believe turning the heater on for a few hours at a time and then off for an equal amount of time would be best. That's the one good thing about water, it doesn't fluctuate to rapidly - the problem is that it fluctuate to greater extremes than your fish can.

If you know what the brand and model is, could you google a manual? Most heaters which don't have temperature settings will usually heat to a preset temperature, but I'm not sure what the thing is you're turning. Are you saying it's a preset one and you're not sure what it's going to heat to, or are you concerned that it is broken?

i was worried that it would cook my fish and it nearly did. i came home today to find the tank at 29 degrees. i decided to phone juwel up themselves and they have helped me understand how it works a bit better. im still trying to get the temp correct though :/
