Water change day, time to change the filter pad/cartridge for your sponge filter for your smaller tank.
Oh no, you've ran out of cartridges/pads! Well, I tried this yesterday, go to mom's cleaning cabinet and find a scrubber (Make sure they don't have that built in soap stuff) Tried it in my filter until I buy a new cartridge, and I gotta say, it works like a miracle.

I have heard of a few members that use these type of scrubbers in their filters (me NOT being one of them! )

It is a bad idea using one that had been used for the washing up though :X

What filter are you using? I hate the idea of throwing anything away from a filter and replacing it with a new (sterile/barren) media which is a waste of bacteria and lining the pockets of filter manufacturers :/

Hi,

Just read your post on using 'scrubbers' in your filter. What a good idea !

I have a flucal 305 and want to know what I can use as medium in place of the charcoal bags they recommend. Do you think the scrubbers will do the trick, or will my aquarium be missing out on something due to the lack of charcoal ?

[Hi,

I just read your reply to using scrubbers in filters with interest.I currently use a Fluval 305 and wanted your advice on what else I can safely use in the filter apart from the charcoal and biomax rings that Fluval sell.

I recently upgraded from a fluval 105 and put the biomax rings from the old filter into the new one, but none of the cotton wool type stuff (wish I had now). Since then which is about 10days ago I have had a slight rise in nitrite and nitrate readings, but still get zero ammonia readings.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Thank you,

Jon
