hello after a serious outbreak of whitespot while i was away ilost alot of fish. Im now left with my pair of angels so want to try a planted tank. My questions are:
1) How do you keep the good bacteria alive in quarantine tanks when there is no fish in them?
2) Are the juwell t5s any good?
3) When i change my gravel to sand will i go through a spike of some sort because of losing some media in the gravel?
Thats all the questions i need answers to i think if anyone can help or have experience with the juwell t5s please reply cheers.
1, the only way to do this is to keep the tank, like you are doing a fishless cycle. but if you add some media from your main tank, it should be cycled enough to start the tank from scratch, whenever you need it.
2, T5's are good lights, as to if juwel have the same reliability problems with these as they do with there T8's. i'm not sure the jury is in on that yet.
3, this would depend on how old the tank is, how you treat the substrate and the bio load on your tank. if i did this with my tank, i would expect to have a mayor mini cycle. others however do it with no problems. imho, you can avoid potential problems by "rinsing" the old substrate, in the tank as you remove it. then allow the tank to settle and then add your new sand. you could also but a bag, or an old stocking (remember them) full of the old substrate just below the inlet of your filter.
also i have a peice of what i thought was mopani wood in my tank. I have had it in there for about 6 months and it looks like it is rotting. Lots of flakes are falling off and i can peel off the skin of it

Does all wood do this or have a been sold normal garden wood or something
humm, not sure on this, but instinct tells me there may be something wrong. do you have any plecos in the tank? because if they are not rasping on it, its a fair bet there is a problem with it. if not it may just be a case of removing it and giving it a good clean and scrub.
hope this is of some help!
