okay so i just bought and picked up a Tetra Tec EX1200, 300w Hydor Ext heater, Tetra Tec ASP 300 air pump and a Vectron 300 for £90 was this a gd find all kit is used but in flu working order apparently

My questions are because all this kit is used

1) my ASP 300 Air pump as i am a newbie i have no idea what it is used for, is it needed, and because i only got nothing with it only the unit what do i need to get this running?

2) the Vecton 300, it works i know what it dose but because its used can i clean it i shall admit it looks gd and clean but when i opened the Tetra Tec Ex1200 OMG i looked like someone had just picked all over the insides allot of cleaning in that one, but is it safe to open up the Vectron, or is there an easy way to clean or is it best not to bother?

3) just a general note on cleaning, do anyone clean there pipes or is it worth doing i noticed the other day my pipes where yellow/orange colour, and a piece of this yellow orange stuff started cracking of inside of pipe and went into tank :(, as my pipe is over 54" in length is it worth it and whats the best way to clean the pipe flushing with hot water dosnt work, well for me :(

all help and advice much appreciated thnx

1, air pimps most often run airstones or curtains. neither is needed. even so, most of us use them for aesthetic reasons.
2, yes stripping down the vectron is fine. UV units need the bulb changed, fairly, regularly. as with the Airpump, these are not needed for tropical fishkeeping.
though some imagine some gain from using one. they really work best as a short term fix for excess algae. and to help reduce bacteria before it is eradicated with meds.
3. give a good clean to all component's, of the filter.
if you have not got one, download the instructions for the filter.
then strip it down to its parts. making sure all parts are clean.
reassemble the filter using "specialist" Silicone grease,(not Vaseline. this will rot the rubber rings, over time) on all mating parts, including the rubber Orings.
rinse all the media in boiling water. (thats rinse in boiling not boil).
I use a length of string with a bit of lead plant weight on the end. i pass this down my tubing. (I'd suggest you soak the pipes for a hour first.)
when its all the way through i tie a cloth (one small enough to pass through the pipe) to the string .
then i pull the cloth through the pipe. do this till you are satisfied. or, just buy new piping. yellowing can mean the tubing has seen better days.

i hope some of this will give you a hand.

defiantly, thank you, i just gone and got an air stone and some piping and a non return valve i think it is mite as well see what it dose it not il sell it on :), i did strip down the filter and cleaned the crap out of it but not used any silicon grease i shall look for that, i also rinsed the media not in boiling as i don't have a kettle but under the hot tap using a stick while i poke it :), i also ran the filter over night in my bathroom filling up my sink and just pumping water in n out over night to test for leaks and there was no leaks despite not using the grease but i shall get some just in case cheers for the info :) much appreciated will defo give my tubes a clean there only a few weeks old XD

the silicone greas is for the long term health of the Orings.not to stop leaking.
I'm confused. you say your popes a yellow, but only a few week old?
I do my pipes, once every few years. I flush them, if needed, in-between.

glad the rest was of some help
