oh and does anyone know if my mosquitofish is pregnant? i think it is in stage 2-3 of pregnancy if it is pregnant. its tummy isnt very big but its gravid spot is much visible. ill try to get pics. thanks!

Mosquitofish usually have fry every 4 weeks depends on the water temp or conditions. But it is very tricky since the female loves to eat her own offspring.

The size of black spot isn't really required if the females are pregnant, in fact some of my females don't have a black gravid spot, still throwing the fry. But looks like you will have fry soon than you thinks.

would it be okay to put the pregnant fish in a 2 gallon tank when she is about to give birth? cuz if their r more than 10 fry, ill move some of them to some type of tub. Is that ok? or will they get too crowded?

Yeah that's allright, just put the female in 2gal tank with lots of plants so thick. Like java moss or some breeding yarn. Just put her before she give birth or her fry will be stillborn or stressed out. And you can put some fry in the tub as long as it has plants for them to hid into.

does the tank hav to hav plants? and if it does, how expensive r the plants? cuz i run on allowance  ! or could i use eloddea?

Any plants work, even fake ones. Elodea is fine. I usually use spawning yarn when one of my female are close to give birth, I put her in critter keeper. The plants depends on what species cost $4.99 in the local fish stores. The fry depends on the plants for their survival.

spawning yarn?? where do u get that? and wut about $cost$?

(Just to let everyone know, im gona hav mosquitofish fry in a cuple weeks or less so if anyone want them i might be givin some away or sellin them for pocket change, so just contact me from this thread! oh and u hav to be in New York State and in or near Glens Falls)

Spawning yarn you make. Take some ployester yarn, like you might use to make a sweater from scratch, and wrap severaltimes around something about 6 inches long. Take a small piece of yarn and tie the loops together at one spot. Cut the loops of yarn at the opposite end of the loops and you will have a simple mop. Take the tied end and attach it to something that will float and you have a mop that will hang down from the float into the water. The fry can hide between the strands of yarn. The color you choose is up to you. These mops are sold and when people are selling them they are often a green color so they won't look too bad in the tank.

Good link dunchp. I was trying to describe what you are showing.

Yup, I understood what you were saying, but the photos make it much clearer if you have never seen a spawning yarn before.

do u kno how much java moss costs? i might want some of that..... but then again im saving my money 4 2 female guppies..... anyways, how much is java moss? ive got 2 pieces of elodea and some duckweed in the fry tank. Bubbles (female mosquitofish) should be to give birth ready in a week or two, thats my guess anyways.

P.S. Im getting another piece of elodea and another female mosquitofish from my teacher 2morrow! (Im so excited :D! Whee! )
