Alrighty, so in our 28 gallon we have Eco-Complete mixed in with a small gravel. Also have a CO2 bubble ladder thing in the tank as well.
The plants are doing fine so far, but I think they could do better.
I have absolutely no idea how many WPG we have in that tank since we're just using whatever came with the kit. But about how many WPG should we have?
Most of the plants are swords along with some java moss, java fern and a few stem plants.

Now questions on my 10gal. For some reason the sword plants are not doing well at all. I put in a thin layer of laterite w/ some gravel over it where the plants are, I'm also dosing with Flourish and Excel, but the sword plants just aren't doing well at all. Some of the leaves are starting to turn brown. The other plants are doing great though. Stem plants are growing all over the place, dwarf sag is nice and green and slowly but surely growing new leaves, java ferns have gotten alot of little new leaves.
I just can't seem to keep sword plants alive in their tank. I have some root tablets I could also use if that will help any. I would just like to know what might be going wrong with the swords.

Any idea on what lighting your 10gal has? It could be lack of light as I believe amazon sword likes high lighting (some one correct me :))

What kit did you get for your large tank? might be able to find the specs online if its one of the common brands - fluval/juwel/rena etc.

It is whatever Petsmart offers.. think it's Top Fin or something. Fiance got it for Xmas.

I'm pretty sure my 10gal has 2wpg atm. I got those flourescent bulbs from the fish section in walmart. Pretty sure they're 10watts each and the lighting hood thing has 2 in it. Or maybe that would figure 1wpg since there are 2 on each side of the tank.. o_O.. I dunno lol...

Swords have very large root structures and grow into 12 inch plus monsters. herefore a thin layer of laterite is not enough for them to get their roots into. 10cm is recommended but 3-4 should be OK.

Son't worry too much about your lights WPG. Look at the pinned threads and just get some easy to care for plants that are low light lovers like crypts, mosses, Java Ferns etc and feel your way into the hobby before taking any plunges.

You will learn one hell of a loa lot more that way and also hopefully avoid the pitfalls of rushing in before you have the right equipmment, ferts, dosing regimes, and an empty wallet / purse
