Hi, a few questions about Plecs and Angels...

1) Is an imperial plec the same as a zebra plec (as I have read zebras can cost around £150 while i have seen an imperial for £30)?

2) Could I have one of these plecs in a 200l tank?

3) Would it be ok to put a small young angel with fully grown neons and cherry barbs or will it eat them when it reaches adulthood?

4) I keep hearing different opinions about angels... some say have only 1 as more will fight, others to get a pair, others to get a pair but only a pair known to be a breeding pair and others say get a group... opinions??

5) Will a dwarf gourami fight with an angel in a 200l tank?

Thanks

Gemma

Hi, a few questions about Plecs and Angels...

I have neons and angels in my tank together and they are fine together but I have been told when the angels get bigger they will eat them. I have also been told tho that if they grow up together they will be fine

4) I keep hearing different opinions about angels... some say have only 1 as more will fight, others to get a pair, others to get a pair but only a pair known to be a breeding pair and others say get a group... opinions??
I did have 6 but due to an unknown disease i now only have 2. I was told to get 6 as you are more likely to get a breeding pair out of them

5) Will a dwarf gourami fight with an angel in a 200l tank?
I have 2 angels and 3 dwarf gouramis and they are fine

Thanks

Gemma

Thanks, that's good to know. Can anyone answer the questions about the plec?

Hi Lola,

I can't believe it! Something I can comment about from my experience having tanks 30 years ago as a kid:

Dwarf G's & Angels: I raised lots of both back then and I remember them as being virtually always happy with each other. Part of this was that Dwarf Gs seemed by nature less prone to getting in trouble with other fish. (Other Gs were a very different story: I remember blues, pearls, kissings and others could be real fighters depending on the situation.)

Angel numbers: Afraid I can only continue the confusion here... I had a lot of angels in different tanks as a kid and I remember all those combos you describe: I remember pairs swimming beautifully together and seeming to be made for each other. I remember other instances of angels picking at other angels and nipping their fins and being a problem. I also remember big angels behaving like big dominant fish - nipping other fish's fins and eating smaller fish. I guess now I remember it as all part of the fun!

Yep that does confuse things! It's a shame you can't tell just at the fish shop which pairs will get along, I'd hate to buy 2 of them and have to return one... I had to do that with my dwarf gouramis because they fought so much (the LFS stupidly told me I could get 2 males!!).

Thanks for the advice though... still no takers on the plec question?!?

Hi Gemma,

I'm afraid i don't know the answer to your question about the zebra / imperial plecs. You can get plecs which would do well in your tank though.

You may get a more definitive answer in the 'Catfish' section. :good:

Cheers

Hi,

From what I know about Angels is that yes... their personalities do vary, but I have learned from my experience that if you are able to raise younger Angels they tend to behave well with other tank mates. This is not ALWAYS accurate but the majority of the time this has been successful in my experience.

I don't know liters so I can’t comment on those questions, sorry I only know gallons. The angelfish will most definitely pick on or eat the neons. They can be aggressive even at babies. So I would not keep them with small fish.

As to the dwarf gourami I think it will be okay with the agels. Depending on their personality. Each fish is different and you never know unless you try but have a back up plan if it doesn't work.

It's best to keep angels in a group then if one of them pair up the aggression is spread out.

I have mine in a very large group and large tank and I have absolutely no problem. Sometimes you will see someone getting picked on a bit but it doesn't last because of the large group. This is why I would recommend a species only tank. More room for angels = less fighting and bickering.

I know you will enjoy your angels; they are a wonderful fish to have. And they grow super fast. I'm amazed on how fast mine are growing.

A couple pictures of my angels:

Ha ha, thanks for the reply but this thread is a couple of months old. I got the angels over a month ago. In fact 1 just died (possibly of an internal infection) so i have just got a new one. But neither of them ever touched the neons or any other small fish. The new angel (I got last night) hasn't settled in yet, he didn't eat this morning

LOL, I didn't know it was that old. That is kind of funny. It's good your angels didn't touch the neons, usually they would harass them. But it goes to show every fish is different. Don't worry your angel will settle in soon. They seem to settle in faster if there are a large group of fish but he will. Just keep an eye on him.

I have an answer for you on the plec - I think. Is it a yellow looking version of the zebra? Could it be maidenhead aquatics? I know they are selling them as imperial tiger plecs as I bought mine from them as that £30 was the price too.
they are infact leopard frog plecs and not imperial tigers :good: They only grow to 11 cm or up to 4.5 inches.
Here's mine he's awesome , at least I think

He's lovely!! I wish i'd of bought one now. I don't have the room in my tank but yours is far nicer than the ones in the shop anyway!
