at my local lfs I saw a male betta whose coloration was a metallic gold but whose scales had a black outline... It gave it a real neat coloration

I didn't purchase cause his fins were all chewed to pieces ---- but if I see him again today, do you think I should buy????

I said buy. I would consider buying him, if he looked healthy enough, or...if you could put a bit of fit rot meds in with him for awhile. Honestly, the one that I just bought had a bit of fin damage but he's doing fine now, and the finnage is growing back nicely. :)

Yeah, I'd get him! :)
You could always give him medication & his fins would probably shape right up!
Good luck! He sounds like he has nice coloring, too! :D

I said buy! Like the above posters said, the color sounds beautiful and you can treat the tail with some medications :good:

I voted dont buy, as per the sicky on this website....Betta basics and care

Choosing a Betta

When shopping for a betta you should look for the most alert fish, look for clean fins, smooth scales, nice belly and clean water. If the majority of the 'cups' are clean and there are a couple of dirty water cups, avoid those, those are your dirty bettas. Some are messier than others.

Where does its say .. fins all chewed to pieces?

Not being funny just pointing out one of the basic rules of fish keeping.

I'd say defo buy. Fins aren't hard to repair. They just need clean water and a bit of time.

Many people rescue bettas.

wouldnt you consider this betta a rescue that needs a loving home and lead a healthier life? ok the general qualities above are appropiate for buying a fish that you want, but.......

I say buy and give him a home that he deserves, on the condition that he is alert and has good bright eyes, he like most rescues do become alert when moved to the right conditions

I voted don't buy coz I myself bought a male betta that needed some tlc as he had tatty fins but he wasn't right and ended up taking him back to the shop to be euthanised.

But I also believe that if you feel you can make a difference then go for it. You'll reap the benefits if he gets rid of the fin rot.

Buy him and see it as your role to try and bring him back to health. the rewards, should you succeed will be great!
Good luck let us know how it goes and put pics too
