i just bought a new betta from my local fish store and he likes to lay on the bottom of his bowl. Is this normal at all? He will lay on the bottom for maybe a minute and then come back up and be all active again. Anybody ever seen this happen?

It's normal for bettas to rest every once in a while. If he's otherwise active and healthy, it's probably nothing to worry about. :)

Yes, it sounds normal. :) But if his fins are clamped to the sides of his body then that is a sign of illness.

My betta rests on the bottom. It is normal unless there are other signs which could be illnesses.

yup, you have to remember it can be really hard for them to swim with all those fin's, so they do like to take a little break and rest either on the floor or on bits of wood/equipment/leaves, all sorts really. Might be worth checking what the output of your filter is like, if he's doing it loads he could be getting worn out swimming against too much current all the time and if that's the case then turn it down as eventually it will start to take it's toll.
