So I've had gourami's for 3 years, and have loved them as an addition to my tanks. The only thing is, I've had them in different tanks, 1 gourmai per community tank that I own.
To anyone who has experience with gourami's in the same tank, this is a question for you. I've had 1 blue gourami for 2 years now, and she has mainly been in a tank with smaller fish (i.e. danios, swordtails, and chinese algae eaters). When I first bought her I did not know if she was a he or she, and bought 2 gouramis that shared the same tank. The one I currently own bullied the other so much, that I gave the other one away. I later found out that they were both females, so that explains it. But now I have another blue gourami. He is brand new, I bought him a montha ago and is about an inch long, but growing fast. He was kept in a tank with a dwarf gourami up until today. The blue and dwarf got along fine until about a week ago, when the blue dominated the tank, and terrorized the dwarf (because he's growing much faster).
So my question: The previously agressive female (and twice the age/size of the new male) is now not chasing/terrorizing the new smaller male, but inspecting and following him.
I want to know if the age/size differential of the two gourami's will affect their interaction as the "novelty" of a new gourami wears off the female (which is the dominant/old resident of the tank)?
Any advice, or things to watch out for? Or is it a good thing that she is now very inquisitive and friendly towards a male? The male seems a little intimidated, but not scared and hiding from her. So I think that this pairing will be good, Hopefully so??
Any comments, advice, or anything will be greatly appreciated to this first-timer of a pairing of a male/female of the same species.
