Question On The Zeo Carbon Thing In Filters

The Carbon things in the filter that take out the amonia, heard they are a waste of time and money and was told to remove before a fishless cycle. (done)

What do i put in its place as there is now a big gap inside the filter where the cartridge used to be?

Shall i just leave it out completely until the cycle is complete? To be honest i don't really want to use them, as i will not buy a refill ever again...
Is the filter ok running like that for now?

You could replace it with a sponge filter but you could also leave that space empty in case at a later date you need to use carbon to remove medication.

ok good, i just didn't want to leave it empty if it wasn't going to do any good and cycle itself properly. I will save the carbon cartridge somewhere as i heard it is good for getting meds out the water too?

would you leave it empty during a fishless cycle then? or replace it with sponge?
