I am currently setting up my 180 fluval vincenza. No water in it at the moment as there is a small part missing on the filter. My question is when I do fill it and get it up and running can I put some of the filter/old sponge from my biorb in some tights into the tank to help start things off, is there a benefit to this?
The more I read the more confused I am getting myself. The biorb will remain up and running until the fluval is ready.

Will you be moving all the fish from the BiOrb to the bigger tank?

'Cycling' is all about growing enough bacteria to eat all the ammonia your fish produce. Your BiOrb is (presumably!) already cycled for those fish.

If you want to move them all to the big tank, all you need to do (apart from getting it set up, checking for leaks and that the heater's working, etc) is put all of the current bio media into your new filter; move the fish over at the same time and away you go.

The only problem you might have is that the bio media in the BiOrb is all that rocky stuff in the bottom; you might not be able to fit it all into your new filter. If that's the case, get back to us and we can work out the best way of going around it for you :)

Hope that helps; do post back if I'm not making sense (happens all the time ;) )

I will be moving all the fish, that said there are only 3 neon tetras and 3 zebra danio.
I am going to get rid of the biorb, have never really been happy with it, moving up to a big boys tank.
I could replace the existing media with that from the biorb, but would I introduce the bacteria by just putting ut all inside something and putting it in the tank. The trouble with the biorb is that all that media gets really gunky at the bottom (one of my pet hates) so I would prefer to indroduce the bacteria and then get rid of the biord stuff. Alternatively if I could find someone local to me (Gloucester) to donate some media that would be ideal as I have a problem with some type of hair algae in the orb, so would prefer not to introduce that into my new tank.

So if I used the biorb media in my filter do I still do the fishless cycle??

Just want to do this all properly....
