Just a quick question: The filter in my 10 gallon tank is getting slimy (algae I'm assuming), and rinsing it in the aquarium water I've removed for water changes isn't helping to remove any of it. If I should need to put a new filter in, should it be soaked in the aquarium water first or do I need to squeeze out the water/bacteria from the old filter onto the new one? The tank is still in the first stage of cycling (ammonia is high, no nitrite readings yet). If I should just leave the old filter in, please let me know.

Thanks to all who respond.

Yes you shold leave it in and when you have finished cycling and you do your 75-90% water change clean it really well in that water.

Yeh you should leave it in, then clean it when fully cycled.

You shouldn't have to change filter media unless it is broken or ripped.
