I've been browsing the forums looking for a thread with a question similar to this and I just can't seem to find an answer I can apply to my tank. So here goes.

I just got my new 29 gallon set up yesterday with a sand bottom. I purchased play sand as my substrate and added it in. Problem here; completely forgot to wash it first. My water is now the color of runny chocolate milk. I stirred it all up with my hand earlier, rubbing at the bottom until the sand on top was firm and nothing seemed to be escaping and then I drained the whole thing with the debris floating. I readded the water and it's murky again, but I'm hoping it clears up a bit better this time.

Is there anything I should do? Should I empty it all over and use another bag of sand and rinse it this time around? Think it'll settle on its own? Should I turn on the filter to help trap some of the particles? I'm just full of questions. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Hi, all substrate needs washing thoroughly especially sand.

My advice is to drain, remove sand and rinse otherwise you will always have problems.

sorry

Nah, don't apologize. That's exactly what I needed to hear. Looks like I've got some work ahead of me! Thanks!

yup, dont get new stuff, just rinse that stuff. dont worry we all been there b4:p rinse it a LOT.. and it will still prolly be cloudy-ish after like 10 rinses,, Turn on filter and mine cleared up overnight.

Murph

.................or you could just turn the filter on and let the filter do the work.

It would then just be a case of washing out your filter every day or so until it clears.

Agreed. I never wash it. When you do it wont get much of he dust out and you waste loads of water.

I put it in. Fill with water. cannot see a thing. turn on the filter. leave 24 hours. clean the media. put back and then leave it till water change day when I clean the media again.

Can't see any problems with my clarity seeing as the sand has never been washed!!!
