why can't they put Bettas in glass aquariums (not with other Bettas buts with other fish that they get along with?) Because the way they keep them right now is kind of cruel isn't it?

well I know that you can keep them with Albino Catfish, Cherry Barbs, and Diamond Tetras.

There are several reasons, because Betta's "like being kept in shallow water"
Also, money. Have you been in a petshop recently? They have shelves upon shelves of betta's, There's no way a petshop would spend the money to get individual tanks for those fish, which is really what they would need.
Even the specialty fish and bird store down here keeps their betta's in little glass vases, better than Petsmart and Petco, yes, but still nowhere near enough.

its money and mass volume. my husbands work has around 200 bettas right now. getting more in tomorrow. no way would it be price economical for them to decently house them all. and the thing is bettas in America are becoming a bigger and bigger seller, because people don’t buy the 29 gallon with nice heater and filter to house them. they get the betta keepers the size of a soda bottle and spend less money.

My LFS has just installed a wall of approx 2 gallon cube tanks containg fish suitable for smaller ( not tiny ) aquariums. They have a couple of giant bettas in there at the moment, along with killis, galaxy rasboros and shrimp. I presume they will also keep their regular bettas in this setup also when they get them in.

Before the installation the bettas were kept in the tanks with the other small fish, such as cories ,tetras and danios. Not the best idea but certainly better than the cups used so often in the US. I have yet to see an LFS in my area that uses cups or tiny pots for bettas.

Sometimes I see 1 female betta in fish tanks, not in a cup. But now more and more females are in cups.

cherry barbs and diamond tetras!? no way! they would nip the living crap out of them
My brother has kept them in the same tank before

at my LFS, they just put male bettas in tanks with other fish and there is hardly any other problems, though its generally tetras and cories theyre kept with
thats a good thing

yeah but common sense, they have other fishes in varieties of possibly 10G tank, so with the fish they have, they should figure out who can go with bettas and put them in a tank. Might be quite hard but its possible

The store i work at on weekends keeps bettas in cups. When ever i try to set up bigger bowls or put them in the empty tanks i get yelled at

They are in cups to save money. There is a strictly fish shop near me that sells bettas. They are kept in these little bubble things that are smaller then the cups you see at petco. Sheesh, come on! The most I have seen them have at one time is like 6.

Have you explained that the bigger environment and regular water care will result in healthy stock that people will actually want to pay money for as opposed to half dead suffering fish who no one wants? It's in their interests as a store if they want to make money from these fish .

Do they not have a cheap plain long display tank they can set up and divide to house the individual fish? If there are usually a few tanks empty on a regular basis, why can't they divide them for pairs of males and keep a soroity tank of females? It makes no sense at all if there are spare tanks free for this use.

Healthy fish make money, sick fish will be a waste of money to the owners/management.

around where I live the chain stores cater to those too uneducated/stupid/dont care to know what a sick fish is.
