Hey everyone,

I'm new here and I have a question about my male betta fish. He's my first betta and I've had him for almost a year now. Today when I went to see him, he flared at me-twice. Now, I know that this is absolutely normal behavior for a male betta, but the entire time I've had him, not once has he flared. Not even for a mirror. Did he just randomly decide he enjoyed doing it? I know this is a silly question, but I wanted to get some expert advice.

Thanks!

Hi there :) A lot of bettas do what bettas do. But sometimes you get the odd one with a little bit of character an attitude that is a bit outside the norm. He may have been bored before. Have you added something different to your tank? Flaring is a good thing, he must want some attention or he is getting cranky with old age. Its hard to say why, it could be anything. Send us a pic of him if you can. :)

The only thing I've changed is bringing him from my dorm room to my house for the summer. Nothing in his tank has changed, but maybe he likes my house better?

Here's a picture of him. I apologize for the terrible quality. My camera is broken, so I had to use my phone.

I have a betta who almost never flares at me, but once or twice he has done out of the blue. Don't know why, I'm sure he was trying to communicate something. Nothing to worry about.
