If I was to add the media from a new internal to my cycled cannister, how long will the new media take to seed from the cannister's media?

Agree^^

1 month is a safe time period to allow a significant amount of bacteria to colonize on the new media.

Agreed. 1 month is about right. 6 weeks would be ideal, giving you that extra peace of mind, but 1 month should be sufficient.

The most important thing is to test your bacteria once the seeding is finished. I assume you are doing this to set up another tank? If so, once seeding is complete, add the media to the filter and test the bacteria's effectiveness by adding 3 - 4ppm of ammonia and see how long it takes to clear.

This test will give a good indication of how ready the filter media actually is before adding fish.

Good luck. If you have any other questions, just ask.

Hey BTT!

How's it going with the new status, and all the extra buttons?

Once again, congratulations BTT! :good:

Thanks FHM. :good:

I'm just finding my feet just now, but I'm sure I'll be up and running in no time.

Please feel free to take this conversation to PMs or the thread in BA&S, in order that we don't clog up Macko's thread.

Cheers :good:

Quick follow-up question: When you are trying to seed media, where in the flow should you put it? Would you put the mature media "downstream" or "upstream" from the media you wish to seed? Thanks!

I would put it "downstream" that way it won't get all clogged up with debris, but it really doesn't matter.

Anything in the filter is going to have colonizes of beneficial bacteria on it.

So where ever you decide to put it, there are going to be bacteria that colonize on it. :good:

Cool, thanks. I wasn't sure if I should let the new media have the first crack at the ammonia, or let the water flow help the bacteria migrate, lol. :fun:

Ohhhh....... Now that's something I would never do, but then I'm from the old school. I take some old media out of one filter and plop it right into another. It's always good to go. I just bought 6 new corys today and had to set up a quarantine tank for them. I just stole some filter floss from one of my community tanks, added water, and put the fish in. For no particular reason I always put the old media on top. You can see the fish and filter here:
