this maybe a silly question, i have been in the fish keeping hobby for 3 yrs now, love every minute of it. but i have only been dealing with community fish, angels, tetras, cory cats, etc.

i just recieved a new 65 gallon tank but no filter. i have additional filers in my tanks i have set up now, just for the purpose of not having to cycle the new filter etc.

well i want to expand and get into cichlids. and my question is, can i take an established filter from a tropical community tank and use it in the new cichlids tank, and have it work without destroying the benificial bacteria already on the established filter? or do i have to cycle a new filter with cichlids?

thanks for any info

joe

Yes fine, when you swop it over take it off immediately and place it on the new tank, how quickly will you be adding fish ? as the bacteria in the filter will need "food" in the form of fish waste or ammonia to keep them ticking over.

It will work fine just as long as you dechlorinate the water and like the previous post says have fish ready to go. Also if you plan on keeping africans they like the water on the hard side.
