Almost all of the info I've been able to find has been about males...I have a few questions about the girls

I have a 10 gal Guppy tank. There are only 3 adults, the rest are fry and I don't plan to let the tank crowd much more than it is...can I keep a female with these guys?

How many females can be kept together and what is the minimum size tank for one? Would I be able to keep more than one in a 10 gal? Are they the same as males in not liking surface movement or currents? Or are they kept like any other tropical fish...normal filter current, air stone, etc.?

Do the females have different tail types like males? Like CT? I doubt I'd be able to get anything fancy around here, but ya never know lol I didn't think I'd find my boys, either...just luck, I suppose :X

There were a million more things I wanted to ask but I'm having a brain fart at the moment  If I remember, I'll post...

If I do end up finding a nice female around here, I want to make sure I know what I'm doing...any advice or tips would be appreciated!! :good:

Most of this info can be found on here if you do a search...

Females can be kept with other fish. I may worry about them eating the fry if they are too small. If you want to keep more than one, you should probably keep 4 in mind as a minimum. They're aggressive, but usually won't kill each other. If you have enough of them together, the aggression will be spread more evenly instead of one picking on another. There's always one fish that's stronger than another.

There are all different tail types, just like males. I've noticed that higher currents stress my males more than my females, but my females are still stressed a bit by a higher current.

The same rules apply here as with all fish, 1 gal. per fish, so 4 should be kept in a 4 gal. tank at the least. You would be better off getting a 10 gal. though with 6 females as a 10 gal. would be both cheaper and easier to maintain with the benefit of more room per fish, as well as the aggression being spread out more among the 6 instead of being more concentrated with just 4. You should make sure to have plenty of plants and hiding spots so the less aggressive females have a place to go when they feel like fleeing the more aggressive females.

I was planning on getting another 10 gal in the very near future...just need to find a place to put it lol

I'm also a big fan of heavily planted tanks and I prefer live plants :good:

Thanks for the help, guys!!

Six girls to one 10 gallon?! Are you nuts?! I was doing regular changes in my 10 with five girls, and one still died from amonia levels. It was filtered and everything. Four girls at the most, I'd say.

was your tank cycled to begin with and how much were you feeding them?

If you only had 5 girls in a 10gal and you lost one then there must of been something else wrong. I have a 10 gal that is wellover stocked (only until my fish room is finished) with nearly double the amout there should be and i have no problems with amonia levels at all - tho i really would not recommend this to any one as usually it wouldn't work and i will be correcting this soon.

Back to topic...
personally i wouldn't keep females with guppies especially if you have males in there as the female betta will mistake them for a male betta and could attack them and yes the females will eat all of your guppy fry.

6-8 girls in a 10 gal with plants and hiding places is perfect. For planting your tank i would look and broad leaved plants and maybe some java moss as they will hide in this. Java fearn is an easy to keep plant, is great with bettas and looks good too, plus with both the jave plants you don't need gravel to plant them in

Thanks for all the replies, guys :good:

I picked up a female last night and she is in with my Guppies for the time being. I picked up a 5 gal (just glass) and set it up this morning...still waiting for the hood I ordered and I need to pick up a filter before I put her in there. I have another 5 gal someone is giving me today...I'm going to try to talk the boyfriend into getting rid of the Guppies so I can have more females and use the 10 gal instead of the 5 gal...so I can divide my two 5 gal tanks and have more males :hey:

Did any of that make sense? lol I feel like I'm rambling :X

Ack! :look: Me and fish pics just don't mix...I'll try to get one of her lol She's in a tank with a black background, black sand and she's almost black with very little blue on her fins...might be a bit difficult

I have one more question  All of the females I've seen in my town are a dark red with horizontal stripes down their body. I haven't seen any females that look like that on here (maybe I missed them?) But is that a normal type? The guy at one store said most females look like that. The girl I got yesterday doesn't, but she's the only one I've seen in my whole city that doesn't have the dark horizontal stripes down her body ???

Horizontal stripes are stress stripes. Our females still show them sometimes when they are squabbling :D
This is Camelia with and without.

Well I suppose that makes perfect sense since all the females I've seen have been in tanks with Tetras and their fins were all torn and ripped

Poor girls...now I want to go buy all of them, too!
