I was wondering is it true that bettas can live without a filter? i have a 54 litre tank that i got recently and i'm thinking of getting a betta or two obviously not 2 males as i know they fight like anything. I was thinking of putting a male and female pair in there, it's not a cycled tank so i was wondering if they can live without the filter would they be ok in the tank until it cycles?

Thanks.

Bettas don't necessarily need filters because most of the time, they are in small tanks and people do water changes quite often. But in a big tank, it would be a lot kinder to the betta to cycle the tank before you put the betta in it.

As for the male/female pair, that isn't really something I would do. You will have fry. And I'm pretty sure the males and females fight with each other too. And I do know that when they breed, after the female lays the eggs, you have to remove her from the tank.

I'm not sure how many gallons 54 liters is, but if it's 10 gallons or larger, you could do a sorority of female bettas.

Big tanks need fliters and its a big no to put a male and female in a tank unless its time to breed them. I mean they dont need filters but it would be recomended

The only way to keep the male and female in the same tank is to put a divider into the tank...and make sure there isn't enough room between the lid and divider for one of the fish to jump over.

A filter is not necessary for bettas. However it is nice because it keeps their tank cleaner and there is always water movement in the tank so this helps prevent stale water. :)

Do not put a male and female together. The two will not get along, nor will they breed like any other fish. They will fight and one may possibly die. Bettas are aggressive fish and prefer to be kept solitary, unless it is with a shrimp, snail, or something like that that stays on the bottom.

And females do better in a group of 5 or more females. Which is then called a sorarity. If you only have two females there is a chance one may kill another.

Be sure to do some more research on the Betta breed before you purchase them. Also check out the Betta section of this forum as there is lots of information in there! :good:
