At walmart I saw ammonia with surfactant and shop rite had clear ammonia with ammonium hydroxide
can either of these be used to cycle a fish tank? :/
if not where in the United States would I find some, and what ingredients does it need to say?
I also looked in another old thread about finding ammonia its mostly UK places
thanks for any answers I'm really excited to finally start to cycle my new tank!

The pure ammonium hydroxide in water is the stuff you want.
Surfactants is a fancy word for detergents which is never welcome in one of my tanks.

thanks for that answer (and a few others you gave before :) ) I guess I'll be buying that tommorow

CT - I'm in South Carolina, and the only place I could find pure ammonia was at ACE Hardware. It was labeled "Janitorial Strength Formula", and it worked great for me. Just don't get your nose anywhere near it! Very concentrated stuff.

I also live in South Carolina and I can confirm Gvilleguy's find. I looked at Walmart and several other places and the only place I could find it is Ace.

I live in Illinois and got mine from Ace too. It sounds like CT got lucky and found it somewhere else.

The closest ace near me is only about a 20 minute drive a way (unless there is traffic)
but,I'm surprised out of all places I found it at a new Shop-rite for about $2.49 for a gallon :)
now all I need is substrate and a test kit now

My one and only experience with test kits is the API Master Freshwater - but it has been awesome for me! I've been doing nearly daily tests of one kind or another for 3 months now and still have not run out of any of the test chemicals. One of the test tubes was broken when I opened the box - I contacted API and they sent me a replacement tube, no charge.

If its around 20$ I'll get it seems good to me!
