Do you have a quarantine tank?
Or do you just put new fish straight in your main (one of your) tank?

Just curious really...
I do not have one but after advice and extensive reading think I should get one?

for freshwater, I have quarentined my fish due to the higher prob of illness in fresh fish (more widely traded and bigger chance of infection). I should prob quarentine my salt fish as well but I usually trust my local reef shop as they are good and usually hold fish for a week or two before putting them up for sale. This does not rule out all illness as incubation time can be longer than a week, but it is better than most shops do and rules out alot of chance:good:

My fish come from stores that hold fish for several weeks, but I still quarantine everything that comes in, just in case. All but one of the LFS here use central filters that service many (if not all) of their tanks, so all it takes is one dead fish the next row over to make the entire stock suspect.

I used to use a 20 gallon long tank for it, but the temptation of all the things I could stock it with became too much, so I have a 5 gallon quarantine now.

It's always a good idea to quarantine new fish. A five or ten gallon tank (with a simple air pump driven box filter) can be easily set up and taken down again when the fish are ready to be put in their permanent home.

It's just not worth the risk of losing a tank of fish by being too lazy or cheap to take the trouble to quarantine newcomers.

Currently I'm using a 29 gallon to quaratine. I've never QT until now. Reason being, I have about 20 other fish in my main tank that depend on it! I don't want the whole group to come down with something  I usually QT for at least 4 weeks

I'm very tempted to put something in my 29 usg though  someday!

I have a 10gal tank with a very simple canister filter I whipped up.

Airline tube stuck into an empty fish food can, filled with sand, topped with larger rocks to hold down the tube. Voila.

I did have a filter for it...but, it died on me, so I'm just using the can...
