Quarantine/hospital Tank

I've just finished going through all the traumas of setting up a 64l tank experiencing all the cycling etc things that so many others describe here (sleepless nights). It comes good in the end though doesn't it! So instead of leaving it there i'm considering setting up a much bigger 120l tank in the new year. My concern here is that the text books make it sound very important to have a quarantine/hospital tank, if not both. I'm really pushing my luck suggesting having the 4ft tank (space in the house) to my wife, so the suggestion or possibility of having a Q/H tank is not really feasible. Do I need to be concerned? If I get hit with illness (the fish that is) will I regret not having this option or is it ok to treat most things in the main tanks? Thanks in advance.

£5 storage container from homebase would do the job, just change a good portion of the water every day and you wont need to worry about a filter.

Wouldn't that be quite stressful for an ill fish?

only if you are daft and use a bucket and slosh the water all over the shop, using a hose to siphon it out and back in = next to no disruption.

That's right of course - just did a 25% in my tank and the fish didn't know about it at all - in fact they seen to enjoy it. Presumably you would you have to replenish the medicines each time as you change the water?

You will need an air pump and either a sponge filter or an air-stone as well a a heater. I keep a few plastic plants I use to provide fish with some cover as a stress reliever. I often use a 10 gallon tank for this purpose (about 38L)
