What exactly is a quarantine/hospital tank? Is it juts an empty tank off to the side that if need be you can just fill it up with water and store fish in it, albeit with daily water changes?

Or is it a tank that's always running, and or just filled with water and has occasional water changes to keep any beneficial bacteria in it alive?

I recently got a new tank so I want to set up a proper system, and use my old 10g as a quarantine/hospital tank. Is it safe to also use it as a breeder when it is not in use?

I guess the first thing to figure out is what it is!

Thanks!

Basically, that's it. Some people keep them running so they are ready but it's just as simple to keep extra media in your filters and move some over when you need the H/Q tank. Any time you buy new fish it is best to quarantine them for a minimum of 2 weeks and preferably 4 weeks to make sure they are disease free before introducing them into your tanks. Diseases like Ich have a life cycle so it takes at least 2 weeks to make sure the fish are safe. The last thing you want to do is put diseased fish in your established tank and wipe it out. You can definitely use it as a breeder while you it's not needed for Q/T purposes.

i use a little 30 ltr for a hospital/quarentine tank , i also use it for spawning my WC minnows when i want some again
when the tanks not in use i store it beside the sofa out the way empty - i remove the filter right away and run it in one of my other tanks where it stays until needed again
works perfectly fine for me doing that

good luck and qt tanks are definately worth it

How do you run the filter/media in another tank? I can't fit another filter or anything in the filter for my new 110L.

Just put the extra filter into the tank is the idea. A sponge or internal filter can be set into the tank. A HOB can be hung on the tank as an extra. I even have a large canister type running as an extra on my 120 gallon community so that I will have an extra cycled filter.

Ok, I think I'll go out and buy a sponge filter or make one then, as the HOB for the 30ltr is custom for that tank, it was a kit. Really crappy. :D
