Are these fish best kept in groups of 3, or can you get them singularly or 2 of them?

we have a pair and they're getting on fine

found shed loads of conflicting info on they're numbers then our lfs got 2 of them in, we observed them together in the tank for a few months and they were fine as a pair so we took them home.

I've seen all of the above combinations, including a lone one in a tank that's 10 years old. Cardinals seem very flexible in the shoaling regard.
