Hey Guys

I wanted to get some pygmy cories. Just wondering if they are compatible with the betta species. is 5 gallon enough?

How many should i get ? They like to be in groups right?

Thanks!

Depending on the betta, they can eat them sometimes. I have had my bettas eat fish as big (or should I say as small) as endlers, and pygmies are quite tiny! So if pygmies are expensive in your area, be careful lol.

Since pygmies need to be in a group of at least 6 (8 or 10 is even better), I would be cautious about the bioload, espescially if the tank isn't planted.

Another tip: Feed the pygmies sinking fry granules. Unlike an algae wafer, they fall in between the gravel where the betta cannot hog them and give himself bloat!

Good luck,
Kelly

5 pygmys and a betta would be fine but you need to wait about 6 months because they like muture tanks.

Can you get a 10-gallon instead. . .what if your betta DOES eat all the cute little cories and your fish is left all alone? With a bigger tank, you can then add other compatiable(bigger) fish that the Betta cannot eat.

Maybe also getting a female betta would be better because they have smaller mouths.

Another idea would be setting up pygmy and guppies together. Mine live together in peace.

I wish i could, but being a university student, that is all i can afford, and the tank that i have right now is fairly new, and i cycled it and everything, spent a good amount of money on my betta.

I'll just have to keep a watch on him either way no matter the kind of fish I put in. So let's see. i'll put the cories with the plastic bag in the tank to acclimate. If my betta flares, i'll take them back.

That's a good plan. When I tested out tank mates for my female better, the only ones she found totally uninteresting were rasboras. She never flared at them. Unfortunetly they all bicker over food (I've hand feed my betta to help with this)>
