Hi I have read in a few of the emergency threads people talking about putting the fish out of their misery? I'm just wondering how people do this? Surely there isn't a humane way to do this. Don't worry, I'm not thinking about doing it. I just couldn't understand how it works.

I believe a quick blow to the back of the head is the quickest way. It paralizes the fish and shuts off oxygen flow to the brain.

Some people have spoken of freezing them, but I gotta think when I'm out in the cold, this would not be a pleasent way to go....

Jesus. I was expecting something a little more, well, nice. But I guess there isn't really a nice way to kill something.

Thank you for clearning that up. I'll be certain to do my best looking after them so it never comes to this.

Ive had the misfortune of having to euthanize a fishy or two myself.
For the smaller fish it isn't as easy to make a blow to the back of the head, The freezing side isn't quite like just lowering the temp gently, more of a case of putting the tropical fish into a cup / bucket of ICE COLD water. It causes an instant reaction with the fish that causes the the nervous system to shut down instantly which also shuts down all the major organs, this method is deemed by a few myself included as one of the more humane ways to "end the fishes misery" as it is instantaneous.

I usually cut their heads off quickly with a sharp knife ...instant death with no suffering.

Ways to put fish to sleep

Above is a good article that basically covers all bases and the proper ways to do it, in regards to "putting fish out of their misery".

I have also used the product that darknirvana217 linked and it works really well.

hope that helps,
