Putting New Fish In Your Tank

For my FW fish, they usually get about 20 minutes floating, a quick temp and pH check and in they go.

SW fish get an hour of floating with a few pints of tank water tipped into their bag. Once Salinity and temp are the same, in they go.

SW inverts get at least 2 hours of acclimatisation at a rate of around 1 drip per second.

if i don't trust the water from the lfs i wouldn't buy fish from there!!!

It's not that I don't trust my lfs. I do. While my husband and I were researching tropicals and how to keep fish, every single reference said never to add the lfs water to the tank. That's why we don't. It was not a personal choice we made. I'm sure, as with everything, there are varying opinions.

absolutely, all i can speak from is my own experience.

i've never once bothered separating out the water and not adding it, i just put it in my tank and i've never once had a problem that i could attribute to that.

i'm careful with buying my stock and it's very rare i loose new arrivals and happily since i've been significantly more picky where i get fish from i've never bought a disease into my tank from new arrivals either.

i let lfs's water into my tank.

the acclimitisation process basicalyl depends on how much different your parameters are to the water they are in.

if they are very similar and the fish are not sensitive you can just float the bag for the temp to adjust for 15 mins or so. if the conditions are very different you should do a drip acclimitisation where you float the bag in the tank and use a peg or something to hold it against the tank wall. then get a jug of tank water and place it near the bag and above, get a length of airline and tie a loose knot in it. start a siphon going through the airline then tighten the knot so the water comes through slowly in individual drops, then let the drops fall into the bag with the fish. so the water conditions very slowly and gradually adjust. this can then be left for hrs, topping up the jug so there's plenty of water to go into the bag.

Ditto. I might let something into my tank from their water, but I don't think so...I mean, they are in the same city, so will be using the same base water. Besides, I'm more worried about the temperature and trying to acclimate them slowly. :)

it depends were i get my fish from they put oxgen in the bag so they can stay in the bag for about 4 hours
u should put them in the tank water after about 10 min. becouse they need to settle in there new water temp then u can take them out of the bag

hope this helps

Thats so true, people seem to be petrified of adding LFS water to the tank as it might contain some terrible nasties. But of course if it did then you'd still introduce it to the tank as the new fish would already be infected. In my view the best thing to do is to subject the fish to the least amount of stress as possible, which means slowly tipping the bag. If you wish to be sure of not introducing disease the best thing to do is use a quarantine tank and leave your new fish in there for 6 weeks.
