Hello,

I have just noticed some purple furry stuff on a fake plant in my coldwater tank. The tank already has a fair bit of algae but this does not bother me,.

What could it be? A different algae?

I tried to get a pic, here's the first. I'll put a close up one next...

I'm guessing it's red algae, since it can take on many colors, including the purplish you mentioned. It can be quite a bit of a nuisance, so you may want to learn more about it. Here is a pretty good site -

I know, same here, it's REALLY bad at one store I go to. Every tank is overrun with it, it looks like a giant fuzzy monster in a few! However, since reading about how hard it can be to get rid of it, I don't know if I blame them for not bothering to clean it off... though some work would make it look a heck of a lot nicer! -_-

Thanks for the info...

It didn't look anything like that though. It was more like a layer of felt, rather than fur I suppose, on some of a plant. It was only on one or 2 leaves. I have thrown that plant out and I am in the process of taking all the decor out of the tank and cleaning it thoroughly. I don't get it on the glass at all because of the hillstream loaches, so it's not a massive problem as long as the felty stuff can be gotton rid of.

I have also found some amonia in the tank today for the first time ever. 0.5 was the reading. I am hoping the water change and cleaning will help this, I'll retest tomorrow or later.

I'll keep you posted.

You too huh? I think that my lfs gave up the fight a long time ago. She has so many tanks............................guess it is common when you have so many fish coming and going.........
