My LFS has a FLUVAL canister filter on sale. I think it is time to upgrade from my Aqueon HOB filter. My problem however is going to be my tank hood. It has one "pop out" where the heater goes and one for where the HOB filter goes. The rest of the hood rests on the ridges of the aquarium with the light (a separate unit) sitting on top of that. (See attached pic). So how do I circumvent this problem? With this hood there would be no place to run the water hoses from the canister filter unless I removed the HOB, which I thought would have to remain until the canister gets somewhat established........Yes.......No......?

ANY help appreciated.

Long term it would probably be neatest to use the hob cut outs. I would say you have two options, move your old filter media straight to the new cannister and do away with the hob, or run the two in parallel until the new one is established and just run the in/out pipes temporarily through the main opening/flap.

I'd go with Tim_UK's first idea.
Put all the filter media into the canister, which Fluval is it btw? They have great basket systems in their canisters to add/remove what you desire then away you go.
Keep an eye on the water readings just to make sure there is no mysterious spike in Ammonia and/or Nitrite and voila.

I will 100% back the idea of buying a Fluval - being a loyal owner of a 406, U4, U2 and an FX6 I just love Fluval :D
