On Monday I will finally be getting my long awaited SAPs. This came upon suddenly, so I have no cycled quarantine tank set up. I want to treat them for parasites, and if need be, ick. I have three options...
1. Put them in the fifty five with the giant Danios. This is their permanent home, but I don't know if the medications will stress the Danios or not.
2. Set up my thirty gallon. It isn't cycled, but I can take one of the sixty gallon filters off the fifty five since use that filter and media. How quickly would that cycle the tank?
3. I have a newly set up fifteen gallon tub that will be used as a snail tank. It's been running for a few days and has a fifteen gallon filter with mature media in it. Ammonia is .25 and nitrates are five. Not sure about nitrite. Has two live plants. The tub isn't filled all the way, so it's probably more like ten gallons. Also, should I do a water change on this tank yet? Or will it destroy my current nitrates and I'll have to start over? I'm feeding it with fish food.
Anyways, which do yall think is best? It is six puffers btw, so I would be nervous about the cycling tub. Would the thirty gallon be cycled in time?
Any suggestions are welcome. I'm kind of stuck on this. Help! :)

It's not exactly safe, but I think you could take a chance mixing the SAPs with the Giant Danios. On the whole SAPs are less dangerous to fish that can swim away quickly, and at 55 gallons, the aquarium is big enough to provide some space for all the fish. I've kept with SAPs with Bleeding Heart Tetras and never had the least trouble (though I admit, not everyone is so lucky).

Naturally, take this breathing space to set up the right aquarium for your SAPs. While they can be combined with some fish, they aren't community fish, so you have to be careful.

Cheers, Neale

Actually, the 55 is going to be the SAPs home anyways. :) I was just worried about any parasite medication or salt if we have an ick problem, which I hear the puffers are prone to. I would hate for the Danios too also be infected! So far the only things in the tank are going to be the puffers and Danios, and possibly a bristle nose in a few months, then I'm calling the tank done. I'm hoping they all get along!
Will the medications effect the Danios to much?

Shouldn't do. Anything safe for puffers will be safe for danios. Puffers tend to be more sensitive; or at least, manufacturers would have tested their products on common fish like danios rather than oddballs.
