I was at my LFS yesterday getting some new fish, and wanted to get some Pseudo Acei - which I thought were supposed to be lilac with yellow tails. There was some disagreement between the staff, as 1 said the lovely looking lilacs with yellow dorsals and tails were Gephyrchromis moorii, and that the Psudo Acei were the yucky looking blacky/brown ones in the next tank but that they would change colour as they matured. Hmmm...

Although, the lables on the tanks said the blacky/brown ones were Psuedo Acei 'Black', and that the lilac/yellow ones were Pseudo Acei. The salesguy said the label was wrong, and should be the G Moorii. I ended up buying neither, as didn't feel confident I would be getting what I wanted. One chap at the LFS was very insistent that the Pseudo Acei lilac should only have a yellow tail and not a yellow dorsal fin as well (as the ones in the shop had).

Help!!

There are different locations.

There is one type that is black with a white/yellow tail and a blue with yellow tail.

jamie :D

Ahh - ok. So, do the blue ones have a yellow tail AND a yellow dorsal fin? And do you know what the male / female differences are?

Thanks :)

You where properly right, As go said there are 2 types of acei the lilac with yellow tails and the black with white tails neither of which look anything like the morrii even as young fish.

Get yourself a copy of back to nature guide by ad konings, go back in the shop show them how wrong they are, be warned it does not always go down well, I took 3 syno njasse back after i brought 4 wild caught because they ones they sold me were not, all i got back was "someone else said that,so what are they then".

Two people had informed the shop they were mislabeling the fish but they will not change the label so no more business from me.

These fish werew about 1" in length, so pretty juvenile. Can anyone post up a photo of a moorii and a lilac acei for me?

Thanks in advance!

Oops i made a mistake a Gephyrochromis moori is a yellow fin acei properly and old name before it got reclassified.

Got confused with the hap moori.

The sexing of these is very difficult best to vent them.

Thats not the book i have but it should be about the same but note that alot of the photos look different to the fish we all have in are tanks, The photos are of the best examples of wild fish so there will be differences.

ok - so, the gephyrochromis moorii is now the Pseudo acei, or other way around??

What is venting (newbie question ... )

I think it was a gephyrochromis moorii and is now a pseudotropheus acei.

Venting means turning the fish upside down and having a look at there bits but the fish need to be at sexual maturity about 2",Its the only way to be 100% on sex.

Most of the names and species are in the ad koning books for the acei you get.

Pseudotroupheus sp. "acei", Common names, yellow fin acei, white tail acei and gephyrochromis moorii
