Ok so iv just put the 1st dose of protozin into my tank to hopefully get rid of a fungal infection. I know I need to dose with the same amount over 4 days... Day 1, day 2, day 3 and then on day 6.

What im not sure of though is how long after the final dose on day 6 should I do a water change? And how much should I change? 50%?

I did not change any water until "day 13" after initial Protozin addition, having cut right back on feeding during medication. I then did two 50-75% water changes over two days, not only to dilute the Protozin but also gradually reduce the minor salinity of 0.5mg/l I added during treatment for Ich.

So I should also cut back on feeding for the duration of the medication?

Then do a water change or 2 around a week after the last dose?

i did similar, i ran through the treatment, half dosing because of my loaches, around day 14 i put some carbon in a filter and did a 50% water change, then another 50% 3 days later. Then considered it job done. However, during the treatment i did siphon out about 30 litres on 3 occasions which was simply from "hoovering" the substrate, which i needed to replace. Hope that helps. Food wise, didnt change anything.

I actually think i dosed on day 4 as well. The meds dont say to, but feh, sometimes you do what you feel is right. Worked for me!

I added the protozin as per the instructions (I had taken my black carbon sponge out). My first water change came about 48 hrs after the last dose at which point I put a new carbon sponge in. This was about 2 months back and my fish have been fine since.....touch wood!

Thanks tizer, that helps alot :)

Isn't there carbon already in the filters? Or do u not use it most of the time? Is it safe to take out?

Thanks :)

Sorry to but in....

Interesting thread since I'm now into my second sequence of dosing after it not working first time.

I would like to ask - Do people add salt at the same time as the protazin treatment? LFS has said to do one or the other.

I've raised the temp to 30 for the treatment.

As far as I know it is one or the other, the Salt will kill the parasite that is living in the water as will the medication, the tempriture increase is to speed up the life cycle of the parasite so it falls off the fish into the treated water and dies...this is why you treat for a few more days after you see the last spot on the fish.
