Protein Skimmers

Was looking at buying a protein skimmer, i know its supposed to remove protein matter before it can break down into nitrogenous. But what does that actually do? will it make the water clearer or just cleaner? Also that'll have an affect on nitrates right? Which plants need. ANyone tried one of the ones from hong kong? Their in my price range hehe. I dont need one but would like to try one out.

I personally would not add a skimmer to any freshwater tank, they are really meant for saltwater aquariums.

Some people have tried them on the freshwater tanks but they don't do the job they are set out to do like the saltwater aquariums.

Save your money, and do your regular water changes you will be much further ahead...
