Protein Skimmers

Ive been looking at various parts of equipment involved in a marine tank and want to know;
What is a protein skimmer, what does it do is, it a vital piece of equipment?
Im basicly looking into every part of the setup before i pershase anything (i can be a bit of a nerd )
